Certificate in Design Thinking

Design Thinking is a new, dynamic, exciting and proven management concept used by many of the most successful organisations (Apple, Deutsche Bank etc).Students who aspire to get management positions in any sector of our society are strongly encouraged to understand how design thinking can become a major factor in their own industries’ success. By understanding the design thinking process, they can assist their organisations to bring about dynamic transformations and provide for stability and sustainable success in the future.

Students who undertake this course will benefit from understanding a range of concepts such as differentiation, innovation, creativity, ambidextrous thinking, teamwork, end-user focus and curiosity.

Students will be able to learn through the experiential problem-solving approach to understand the role of Design Thinking in management decision-making and planning strategy. They will be trained to reframe problems, conduct interviews and observations to understand the deeper needs of users so as to arrive with innovative solutions.

Course Duration

Full time: 1 months (3-hour lessons/day, 5 days/week)
Part time: 2.5 months (3-hour lessons/day, 3 days/week)

Course Structure

There are a total of 3 modules have to be completed and passed for the award of the Certificate in Design Thinking.

Course Module and Synopsis

Design for Individual, Others and Society

  • Introduction to the world of design and design thinking through case studies from design thinking practitioners;
  • collecting, recording and linking of information in a digital scrapbook;
  • understanding the types of design people need and how to make them happy; and
  • how does design have an impact in services such as health and education?

Design Thinking Tools

  • tools and techniques to understand and capture users’ specific needs;
  • skills for producing and presenting prototypes.

Design Thinking Processes

  • bringing together all the skills learnt in the first two modules;
    framing a problem and arriving at a good solution; and
  • project to learn the process of design thinking.

Course Learning Objectives

This Certificate programme aims to provide students with the knowledge to understand design and design thinking and how these can have an impact in services such as health and education. The participants will acquire skills in collecting, recording and linking of information, use of tools and techniques to understand and capture users’ specific needs, make prototypes – which is an essential part of design thinking – bring together all the skills learnt to frame a problem, and arrive at a good solution through a project.

Delivery Mode

The course is delivered face-to-face, in classroom mode.

Assessment Methodology

Assessments/Exams are conducted after every module.

Note:
In case students fail the main examination of a particular module, they are allowed to sit for ‘One’ supplement assessment with payment of the appropriate fee*. Students are to re-take the module, shall they fail the supplementary assessment. Modules are independent of each other.

Graduation Requirements and Awards

Students must complete and pass all 3 modules to be awarded the Certificate in Design Thinking will be conferred by the CSM Academy International Pte Ltd.
Local students must achieve an attendance of 75% and international students must achieve an attendance of 90% in any month of the course.

Entry Requirement

Obtained at least a C6 at GCE N levels in any subjects or equivalent. NITEC in any disciplines.

English Requirement

At least a C6 at GCE N level or Academic IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.

Application Fee (Non-Refundable and non-transferrable)

International student: S$600 (before GST)
Local student: S$50 (before GST)*

*Local student refers to Singaporeans/PRs/Employment Pass/Dependant pass holders

Course Fee

For local students: S$ 2,800.00 (before GST)
For International students: S$ 3,800 (before GST)

Insurance Fees

  • Fee Protection Scheme***: Subject to prevailing market rate
  • Medical Insurance Fee****: Subject to prevailing market rate

***The Fee Protection Scheme (FPS) serves to protect students’ paid fees.
****It is compulsory for all local and international students to purchase medical insurance which is valid throughout their course of studies with the CSM Academy International. Local students (Singaporeans, PRs & Non-student’s Pass holders) may opt-out for this scheme if they can provide the proof of adequate medical insurance coverage in Singapore.

Local students

  • A copy of passport (must have at least 1 year validity for foreigners with valid pass) / NRIC (For Singaporean / PRs)
  • Notarised/Certified true copies of all your educational transcripts and completion certificates
  • Proof of English Proficiency; either IELTS/TOEFL score sheet or equivalent qualification (if applicable)
  • A copy of resume
  • Application fee (non-transferable and non-refundable):

Step 3 – Acceptance by the School
Upon receipt of your completed application, you will be notified of the outcome of your application within 2 weeks. Successful applicants will receive Letter of Acceptance via email and mail out the original copy to applicants.

Step 4: Offer Acceptance
If you decide to accept the offer, you will need to sign the Letter of Acceptance via email/post.

Step 5: Payment of Programme Fees
Upon receipt of your signed Letter of Acceptance, you will be required to bring the original certificates for verification and to sign the student contract and follow by course fee payment.

International Students

Step 1 – Fill up the following forms:

  • Application Form – CSM Academy International
  • Matriculation Form
  • ICA Form 16 and Form V36 (complete in English and duly signed by applicant)

Step 2 – Attach the following documents:

 

  • A copy of passport-size photographs with white background
  • A copy of passport (must have at least 1 year validity)
  • A copy of birth certificate
  • Notarised/Certified true copies of all your educational transcripts and completion certificates
  • Proof of English Proficiency; either IELTS/TOEFL score sheet or equivalent qualification (if applicable)
  • Resume or Letter from employer certifying period of employment (if applicable)
  • Bank balance to show a minimum of S$30,000 for students from visa-required countries (China, India etc)
  • Application fee (non-transferable and non-refundable):

Upon receipt of your signed Letter of Acceptance, CSM Academy will proceed to submit your Student’s Pass application via SOLAR+ to Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA). You will know of the outcome within 1 – 2 months.

Step 6: Payment of Programme Fees
Once your Student Pass application is approved-in-principle by ICA, you will be required to bring the original certificates for verification and to sign the student contract and follow by course fee payment. Do contact our Student & Industry Outreach Executive if you require student services on arrival such as airport pick-up, accommodation, medical check-up and more.
