COURSE SYNOPSIS
The Phlebotomy Short Course is designed to equip participants with theoretical knowledge and skills to perform safe and effective venepuncture on adults and to familiarise participants with all aspects of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Learn technique using a winged needle,” also known as a “butterfly needle” or “scalp vein set,” to access veins that are challenging, such as in elderly patients or those with fragile or difficult-to-puncture veins. The flexibility of the tubing and the wings makes them easier to maneuver and stabilize compared to traditional straight needles.
Phlebotomy is a crucial skill in the medical field, involving the safe extraction of blood for tests, transfusions, or donations. In Singapore, organizations like the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) ensure that blood collection practices meet the highest safety standards. Additionally, professionals working in this field often adhere to guidelines set by the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB) to maintain the quality and safety of care

COURSE INFORMATION
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- State the basic principles in infection control and safe patient handling.
- Participants will learn the fundamental principles of infection control, including hand hygiene, use of barriers (PPE), and environmental cleaning to prevent healthcare-associated infections in accordance with Singapore’s healthcare standards.

2. Demonstrate the steps in donning and removing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Participants will be trained in the correct procedures for putting on and removing PPE, including gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection, to minimize the risk of contamination in line with Singapore’s healthcare guidelines.
3. Perform the correct technique in venepuncture and collection of blood specimens, including accessing challenging veins.
- The course will cover the precise technique required for venepuncture, ensuring safe and effective blood specimen collection, including strategies for accessing veins that are difficult to locate or puncture.
4. Describe the complications related to venepuncture and its management.
- Participants will learn to identify potential complications such as hematomas, nerve damage, or infections associated with venepuncture, along with appropriate management and preventive measures.

5. Demonstrate safe handling of specimens and proper documentation.
- The course will teach best practices for the handling, labeling, and transporting of blood specimens, as well as accurate documentation to ensure patient safety and compliance with regulatory standards in Singapore.
The assessment strategy has been designed to address the integration of theory and practice across the course, in line with the course structure. Evidence of competence may be gathered by a number of methods including:
- Direct observation
- Competency assessment
- Stimulated Performance and or Case Scenarios discussions
Course participants would deem to have met the competency of venepuncture upon completion of the course and pass the competency tests.
- This course to open to members of public with a basic understanding of English and physical stamina.
- All participants are required to go for a blood test for Hepatitis and HIV before course commencement.
- Participants who are Hepatitis A, B, C, and HIV tested positive would not be able to attend the course.
CSM Academy will provide with the assistance of our industry partners 30 on-the job training to receive the full certificate. (as per clinic’s schedule)
- Participants will be issued with a “Certificate of Attendance” upon meeting the required 100% course attendance and competency assessment at the 3-day practical course.
- Participants who have finished 30 practical cases under the supervision of a registered doctor or trained phlebotomist are required to return to CSM Academy International to show the 30 practical cases evidence before the academy can issue the participants with a “Certificate of Completion”.

CPE Points to be awarded to Nurses after they attend this course with a max. of 12 points.
