Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 1 in 6 deaths globally. In Singapore, the incidence of many types of cancer have risen drastically over the last 50 years, largely attributed to increased stress levels and rising rates of obesity.

Happy World Braille Day!

Happy World Braille Day!

Every year on January 4th, we celebrate the birthday of Louis Braille. Born on this day in 1809, he lost his sight at age 3 due to an incident in his father’s workshop. Despite this, he became a notable musician and an excellent organist.

Braille became interested in a system of writing created by Charles Barbier, which consisted of raised dots symbolising phonetic sounds. He then adapted this into a system that he could use for the sightless, followed by another system which could be used for musical notation.

The Braille system was then voted to be made the worldwide system of reading and writing in 1878, and with the help of the United Nations, it has been adapted to almost every known language.

Let’s celebrate this system, and celebrate the sightless on this day! Just as it says on Braille’s home in Coupvray, France: “He opened the doors of knowledge to all those who cannot see.”
