Deferment Policy & Procedures

Temporary postponement of a course or module to a later intake.

Course or Module Deferment Policy

Definition of Deferment

A Course or Module Deferment refers to the temporary postponement of a student’s course or module to a later intake or scheduled offering at CSM Academy International.

Deferment may be granted on valid grounds, including but not limited to:

  • Medical reasons;
  • Compassionate or family circumstances;
  • National Service obligations;
  • Employment commitments; or
  • Other exceptional circumstances deemed acceptable by CSM Academy International.

All deferment requests are subject to approval. Where approved, the existing PEI-Student Contract may be amended through an addendum or otherwise managed in accordance with the applicable contractual and regulatory requirements.

Eligibility for Deferment

Students may apply for a deferment subject to the following conditions:

  • Deferment is generally permitted once per course or programme.
  • The maximum deferment period is twelve (12) months, unless otherwise approved by CSM Academy International under exceptional circumstances.
  • Approval is subject to supporting documentation and the availability of a future intake.
  • Students must be in good academic and financial standing unless otherwise approved.

International Students

As Student’s Pass holders are subject to the regulations of the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), CSM Academy International does not normally grant course or module deferment to international students unless otherwise permitted by the relevant authorities and institutional policies.

Approval Process

  • All deferment applications will be reviewed within four (4) weeks from the receipt of a completed application and all required supporting documents.
  • Each application will be assessed based on the reason for deferment, supporting evidence, academic progress, and programme availability.
  • CSM Academy International reserves the right to approve or decline any deferment request.
  • Students will be informed of the outcome in writing.

Impact on Student Contract

Where a deferment is approved:

  • The existing PEI-Student Contract may be amended through an official addendum or other appropriate documentation.
  • Where necessary, a new Student Contract may be issued if the student resumes studies under a new course intake or revised programme structure.
  • Students are required to comply with any revised academic schedules, curriculum updates, or regulatory requirements applicable at the time of resumption.

Fees & Financial Implications

The Refund Policy does not apply to approved deferments.

Students should note that:

  • Tuition fees already paid will generally be carried forward, subject to the terms of the Student Contract.
  • Additional fees may be payable if there are changes to programme fees, curriculum, or administrative charges at the time of resumption.
  • Any outstanding fees must be settled before the student resumes studies.

Students Below 18 Years of Age

Students who are below 18 years old must obtain written consent from a parent or legal guardian before a deferment application can be processed.

Course or Module Deferment Procedure

1

Submission of Deferment Request

Students must submit a completed Course or Module Deferment Request Form and relevant supporting documents where applicable (e.g. medical certificates, employer letters, or other documentary evidence). Students below 18 years of age must also obtain the signature of a parent or legal guardian on the application form.

2

Deferment Counselling

Upon receipt of the application, CSM Academy International’s Student Services or Academic Team will arrange a counselling session with the student. The counselling session aims to ensure that the student understands the implications of deferment, including:

  • Revised course schedules
  • Expected resumption dates
  • Curriculum changes (if any)
  • Tuition fee adjustments (if applicable)
  • Funding implications (where applicable)
  • Academic progression requirements
3

Review & Approval

The deferment application will be reviewed by the relevant Academic Department. The assessment will consider validity of the reason for deferment, supporting documentation, academic progress, course availability, and compliance with CSM Academy International’s academic policies.

The outcome will be communicated to the student in writing. Where approved, the deferment details will be formally recorded, and the Student Contract will be amended through an official addendum or other appropriate documentation.

4

International Students

As Student’s Pass regulations require continuous enrolment, CSM Academy International generally does not offer course or module deferment to international students, unless otherwise permitted under applicable ICA regulations and institutional policies. Students requiring special consideration should contact the Student Services Office for further advice.

5

Processing Timeline

CSM Academy International aims to complete the entire deferment process within four (4) weeks from the receipt of a completed application and all required supporting documents.

6

Resumption of Studies

Before returning to their programme, students must notify CSM Academy International of their intention to resume their studies within the timeframe specified by the Academy. Student Services will assist eligible students with the re-enrolment process and ensure that all administrative requirements, fee arrangements, and academic matters are completed prior to the commencement of classes.
