Course Module and Synopsis

Evaluating Practice Through Theories and Models – NUR09113 (20 Credits @ Level 9)

In this module you will learn to develop your knowledge and skills in evaluating an aspect of care management using theories and/or models to develop and enhance care. You will make recommendations to develop and enhance care for an individual or group of service users.

Health Promotion – HLT08102 (20 credits @ Level 8)
You will look at a broad overview of health promotion principles with a particular focus on inequalities. There will be discussions on why some people have fewer possibilities in life and why others have better access to health and health services. You will also examine why it is important to do health improvement work in key settings, such as schools, with examples supported by guest speakers. This will allow you to see how theory relates to real world examples. In class discussions you will develop your understanding of how health promotion seeks to reduce inequality. There will be some choice of the focus you take in the assignments to allow you to apply what you study.

Innovation and Change (NMS09101 (20 Credits at Level 9)
This module will prepare you to understand the process of innovation and change. The ability to understand the factors which influence strategic change, which is then made operational at care level, will equip you to contribute to the management of the change process.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment in Practice
(NUR09114 (20 Credits @ Level 9)
In this module you will learn about the best available evidence in creating a clinical learning environment for learners within your own area of practice. Using a case study, you will be able to apply this evidence based on your own area of practice.

Pharmacology (NUR09100 (20 Credits @ Level 9)
In this module you will further develop knowledge and understanding of the principles of pharmacology and you will be able to apply them to groups of drugs used within their clinical practice.
Using a biological, systems-based approach, the module will address the groups of drugs which affect selected systems and will address additional areas, such as antibiotics and the effects of pharmacological intervention across the lifespan.

Principles of Research and Evidence-Based Practice
NMS09100 (20 Credits @ Level 9)
This module will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the different types of evidence that may be used to inform practice. Specifically, you will explore different approaches to undertaking research and will have the opportunity to develop your skills to critique research and its relevance to practice. You will also consider factors which will promote or hinder the implementation of evidence to practice.
After completion of this module, you will have the knowledge and skills to be able to appraise evidence and evaluate its appropriateness for implementation in your practice.

Professional, Ethical, and Legal Issues in Health Care
ADN08102 (20 Credits @ Level 8)
This module will enable you to examine professional, ethical, and legal issues relevant to healthcare and will provide you with the opportunity to apply relevant theory to your own day-to-day clinical practice. You will be encouraged to take a person-centered approach to healthcare provision and to examine the values that underpin your practice in terms of delivering compassionate care. You will be required to actively engage with the subject matter of the module and to review, reflect upon and refine future practice.

Assessment of Acute Illness & Health Assessment
NUR09115 (20 Credits @ Level 9)
The module will teach you how to assess acute physical illness and deterioration through studying theoretical, research-based content on  and applying to practical skills stations and to scenarios utilising medium fidelity simulators and actor patients within the clinical skills laboratory.
Following each scenario, there will be the opportunity to “debrief” and critically reflect on your actions.The theoretical content and skills stations are all developed to emphasis a systematic approach to person-centred care, patient assessment and clinical decision making.

Course Learning Objectives

To provide registered nurses with the opportunity to:

  • study core concepts of nursing which are concerned with the well being of individual, family and community and which can be applied to any nursing situation;
  • expand theoretical foundations in the physical, biological and behavioural sciences relevant to the present day practice of nursing;
  • critically analyse structural and functional elements of health care systems and using these make constructive contributions in the development of a health team approach to the delivery of health care in hospital and community health agencies;
  • increase skills in problem solving and appreciate the need for continually recognising and solving problems affecting the delivery of health care in hospital and community health agencies;
  • accept responsibility for continuing personal and professional development and for contributing in a leadership capacity to the changes occurring within nursing and the community;
  • extend skills in the location and interpretation of relevant information and application of administrative records, statistics and other forms of management information, including an awareness of the relevance and use of computers and other types of electronic data processing within the health care system;
  • initiate and/or actively participate in the formulation and implementation of applied research projects;
  • critically evaluate and revise nursing practice.

Delivery of course will have a combination of classroom lectures, tutorials, online & practicals.

Assessment Methodology

Assessments/Exams are conducted after every module.

Students’ learning is assessed from a theoretical and clinical practice perspective. Theory is assessed through problem-based learning via exams, essays, care studies, group work and student presentations.

In case students fail the main examination of a particular module, they are allowed to sit for ‘One’ supplement assessment with payment of the appropriate fee*. Students are to re-take the module, shall they fail the supplementary assessment. Modules are independent of each other.

Graduation Requirements and Awards


Local students must achieve an attendance of 75% and international students must achieve an attendance of 90% in any month of the course.

The foundation of the program spans professional nursing issues, such as ethics, law, quality improvement, personnel and budget management, performance management, strategic and operational business planning, principles of research methodology, written communications, nursing science, health assessment, nursing theories and self-development accountability.

Step 3 – Acceptance by the School
Upon receipt of your completed application, you will be notified of the outcome of your application within 2 weeks. Successful applicants will receive Letter of Acceptance via email and mail out the original copy to applicants.

If you decide to accept the offer, you will need to sign the Letter of Acceptance via email/post.

Step 5: Payment of Programme Fees
